Pravachol (pravastatin sodium) is prescribed to patients who have elevated levels of cholesterol that cannot be controlled through diet and exercise alone. For patients with normal cholesterol (total cholesterol less than 240 mg/dL) and previous heart attack, Pravachol is indicated in addition to diet to reduce the risk of recurrent heart attack; the risk of stroke/mini-stroke; the risk of undergoing heart surgery such as bypass and angioplasty. For patients with elevated cholesterol and evidence of coronary heart disease, Pravachol is indicated in addition to diet to slow the progression of atherosclerosis and to reduce the risk of recurrent heart attacks. For patients with elevated cholesterol and no previous heart attack, Pravachol is indicated in addition to diet to reduce the risk of heart attack; the risk of death from heart disease; and the risk of undergoing heart surgery such as bypass and angioplasty.
